Yellow Houseplant Mushroom – Little Surprise Near Our Cactus

If you want to read this in Turkish: click here.

Two days ago I realized something curious at the bottom of the cactus in our living room. There were two little yellow mushrooms! As much as they look like toys or from Smurfs, they are real! They appear to have yellow pollen-like powder – which is probably the mushroom spores – and have painted the end of spikes of the five cacti in the same pot to yellow.

After some research and friends’ help through Instagram (of course we shared the pictures on Instagram Stories) we learned that it is not as poisonous as we think – as long as you don’t eat it. But still we put the pot in the balcony, just to make sure that it doesn’t have any bad effects through the air we breath indoors.

The scientific name of Yellow Houseplant Mushroom is Leucocoprinus Birnbaumii and it is very common for the potted plants. Apparently the spores come with the soil package or through air and when the conditions like humidity and warmth are good enough, a mushroom just pops out next to various house plants.

Now the pot is resting in the balcony and the two little mushrooms are still there, although they are wilted. It looks like the mushrooms don’t like the cold balcony. We hope that they don’t affect the growth of our beautiful cacti. We will update you 🙂
